After our success in the relay last year for the Veterans age category.
We were out for another win this year.
This year the age categories had changed and we were able to enter two teams:
Victory Vintage veterans (50 -54)
The usual crew taking part again for a dash up and down the prom in the last race of the series [Sept 2011].
Mucho excitement as Jo Pavey was taking part but I didn't see her, she was on the way home by the time I finished!
Good conditions with very little wind meant good times and PBs for a few.
Dan was first Victory member home in 7th and was 1st JM, Jo was 2nd VW40, Jim was 2nd VM60, Marilyn was 1st VW60 and John was 2nd VW65 in his last race as a youngster.
This was followed by the presentations for the series where Dan picked up prizes for being placed in 3 of the races, 2nd overall and 1st JM, Jo picked up the 1st VW40 award and Marilyn collected the VW60 award.
Well done to them all for a great series result!
The series result between me and Jo became unimportant as we reflected on both of us easily achieving our aim of doing all 5 races under 22 minutes and getting a load of PBs over the summer.
Position Name Time
7 Dan Bailey 16:05
27 Paul Mitchinson 17:28 (PB)

96 Jo Gilholm 21:10 (PB)
103 Michael Coles 21:37 (PB)

129 Malcolm Hagan 23:46
144 Nick Bailey 25:06
160 Marilyn Crocker 26:57
After an extended 1/2 hour Sunday lie in & the obligatory nutella on toast to fuel us for our endeavours, Ann & I set off for Lavant Village Green in search of fame & glory in the name of VICTORY! Well, initially, fame & glory seemed unlikely, as our pre paid entry hadn't been registered; fortunately the day & our honour was saved by the superb day entry ladies of the Rotary Club. At the appointed time of 10:00, (a time when I'm usually masticating on my 2nd wedge of bread pudding at the Rowlands Cafe), we were set off on our cheery way, with maps dangling around our necks. At approx mile 2, a significant nos of runners (lemmings?), decided to ignore the signs directing them right & proceeded on into no mans land, for as it transpired later, approximately 2K. Learning from my detour experience of the South Downs Relay, Ann & I did follow the signs & our memory from last years route, where we eventually arrived at our 1st checkpoint, grabbed our drinks & wocketed on & slightly upwards, to a point very close to the summit of Trundle Hill (mountain), after which we whizzed past a herd of nervous cows, and on towards the finish some 2 miles distant, where we were greeted by a cacophony of handclapping as we entered the start/finish area , followed by some chilled guitar melodies as we crossed the finish line, in a joint 1 hour 30 mins 26 secs (11 mins better than 2010); which equated to Ann finishing 3rd in the women's category, with us both finishing 21= ...and we've a certificate too!
We had a great day's running and nobody got lost.
Paul did the first three stages arriving at Rowlands in an excellent third place.
Colin, Jim and Bernie ran an extra leg each because of Dan's unlucky bike accident on Wednesday, and the spectators were impressed when Colin and Bernie charged straight through the changeover points on their back-to-back legs.
Dave arrived bloodstained but smiling at Southrope.
We finished in a secure fifth overall.
Thanks to Martin for heroic efforts in getting the team organised.

Victory Vipers B Team - Martin
Well the eagerly anticipated day arrived and we still had a full team, although we used all our reserves along the way.
It was bright day, a bit chilly at first but with showers expected later.
We assembled at Emsworth with all the other teams, Victory shirts outnumbering all the other clubs and even the first 2 legs providing a bit of additional interest as 5 Victory runners all start together for the drag race to Bartons Field.
Once we were off, there's little time to think as you were either running, driving, rehydrating and worrying where the next changeover point was, as we dashed through the relay legs.
My fine team of Damian, Mike, Graham F, Malcolm and Guy all performed magnificently and we were maintaining a reasonably healthy lead over our nearest Victory rivals, the Vixens and Vets 'n Vamps.
We probably would have finished ahead too but for a navigational mishap by Mike on leg 15 that cost us about 20 minutes.
As always though the day seemed to flash by and before we knew it, we were having sandwiches at Cliddesdon and getting our medals.
I'd like to also say a special thanks to Ann who not only did driving duties but was also an enthusiastic supporter, constantly urging us to speed through to the finish of each leg.
Our overall time was 6hrs 33mins 55secs, I'm not sure where we were placed but we certainly weren't anywhere near last.
It was a cracking day out, the weather stayed dry and we enjoyed the company of the team and all the runners that took part.
Roll on next year!
Victory Vets and Vamps - John G
My team the Victory Vets and Vamps yet again proved to be the team in control.
Honed athletes, each one of them putting in tremendous efforts to ensure, not only did we not get lost, but that we improve two places over lastyear, to 12th and by doing so we also knocked nearly 5 minutes off of last years time.
In the process, leaving our men's Victory Viper B squad and the Victory Vintage teams in our wake. Ho Ho Ho!!
Well done to our ladies team the Victory Vixens who were placed two positions in front of us and picked up the 1st placed Ladies Cup, but it was only 8 minutes in front.
But pride of place must go the the Victory Vipers A squad, they ran the whole race with only 5 runners after their best man Dan got knocked of his bike earlier in the week by a hit and run car driver and could not compete.
A great effort lads well done!
They fished a creditable 5th.
And big thank you to all of our Victory teams for acting as supporters to all of the Victory runners in the race.
Lastly a big thank you to our drivers who helped make a good day into a great one with driving and added support.
This was a charity event, raising money for the Alzheimer's Society.
Thank you to everyone in the club who supported this worthy casue.
